2020 in Review: Going Global!
I’ll try to keep this year’s review shorter than the one I wrote last year, mostly because I still have certain tasks I’m trying to round up even on the last day of the year ☺. So here we go!
2020 has been a long year but on a personal note, it’s been my best year by far. It’s a bit surprising because my year didn’t really kick off until March. Once it did get into gear, it’s been a wild ride and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. I’ve had a couple of challenges along the way, both in my private life and career-wise, cause what is the fun in having a smooth ride? But I’m here, on the last day of the year so I’m grateful to God, family and friends who have helped me get here.
Writing
I started the year writing. I didn’t get the chance to write as much as I would have loved to because my writing frequency dropped drastically as the year ran down. In fact, most of the writing I did was done in the first 6 months. I wrote mostly technical articles and managed to sneak in some poetry here and there (to whom it may concern). I even became a ghostwriter which produced a funny story. I was looking for a solution one day and I managed to stumble on an article I had ghostwritten. As I read, the words and flow just sounded like something I would say so I took another good look and oh oh… I wrote this :).
I ended up writing 25 technical articles this year so let’s see if I can double that next year.
Web Development
I worked on a number of interesting projects this year. Some of which are already in the wild and some still in the works. Last year was when I started working remotely and I just picked off from where I stopped. Working remotely, for me, is just beautiful. I still find it amazing that I’ve worked with people in different parts of Nigeria and now, in different parts of the world, from my room. I don’t know if I’ll ever not be wowed about this but for now, wow!
The work I did challenged me, pushed me to get better, exposed me to new ways and techniques of doing things. Half the time, I was like…
But I still managed to pull through somehow. I found the extra bit of energy and motivation to deliver.
My work finally crossed the borders of Nigeria this year as I worked with some companies outside Nigeria and Africa. I experimented a lot, I picked up new tools for my arsenal. I worked on one project with a framework I had never used before and still managed to deliver on time. That’s why I believe in learning the fundamentals cause programming is programming. If you understand the fundamentals of programming, then it becomes easier to pick up any language/framework.
Finances
If you have money, come and give me. That’s all I can say…
Personal
I realized that while the world is a small place, it’s also a big place because how can you be living in the same area with someone and never manage to cross paths even by mistake? I kept to myself a lot this year, mostly due to remote engagements. COVID-19 was also a big motivating factor to keep to myself so I did just that. I did have a lot of joy with those who are close to me and they made the year bearable.
